The Center for Cybercrime Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance are offering a webinar on “Clearnet Investigations of Cyber-Enabled Fraud.”

Description of the webinar. Chat rooms, discussion forums, and VoIP, instant messaging, and social media platforms have been used to facilitate cyber-enabled fraud, such as the sale of stolen data, skimming, and BEC scams.  This webinar introduces participants to cyber-enabled fraud, types of cyber-enabled fraud, and the platforms used in the commission of these types of cybercrime. Participants will gain practical knowledge of the ways perpetrators of cyber-enabled fraud can be identified on these platforms, and the tools that can be used to identify the individuals and groups that commit these cybercrimes, the roles and associations of individuals within groups, and the tools and tactics they use to commit various forms of cyber-enabled fraud.

Presenters

Paul J. Kim, John Jay College Faculty

Paul Kim is Adjunct Assistant Professor, in the Department of Public Management for John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He is Deputy Chief Information Security Officer of New York City, Head of Threat Management, and New York City Cyber Command Certified Information Systems Security Professional. He has a JD from Boston University and an MPA, from University of Pennsylvania. He has extensive private sector and government experience in cyber investigations, security operations, and strategy.

Courtney Vasil, NCFTA Analyst

Courtney is a National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) Intelligence Analyst II located in Pittsburgh, PA. She is part of the Cyber Financial (Cyfin) Program and interned with FBI Pittsburgh/CIRFU Cyber Division from 2018 to 2020. Courtney has a BA in Cyber Security from Robert Morris University and a MA in Data Analytics from Robert Morris University. She specializes in Business Email Compromise, Digital Payments Abuse Fraud, and Dark Web Investigations.

Brendan Lyle, NCFTA Analyst

Brendan is a National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) Senior Intelligence Analyst located in Pittsburgh, PA. He is in the Brand and Consumer Protection (BCP) Program. Brendan received a BA in Intelligence Studies from Mercyhurst University and an MA in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. He specializes in dark web and online drug investigations.
